Re: Achats et Négociations
Syria "opened its eyes" to the Middle East on the possibilities of Russian weapons
15:41 22 June 2018 Topics: Opinions
Russia's help to the Syrian government in the fight against IGIL1 (a terrorist organization, banned in the Russian Federation) radically changed the course of events in the region. In addition, this resulted in an increase in the global demand for Russian weapons - many of the Middle East "opened his eyes" to this country, the newspaper writes mesp.me .
The two main factors that influence the decision-making process for buying weapons are the effectiveness of weapons in specific conditions, as well as the political factor. The operation in Syria is a demonstration of both the operational capabilities of its weapons, and the firm political will of Russia.
In 2012, Russia supplied its weapons to four countries in the Middle East (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates). Five years later, in 2017, she already supplied arms to eight countries (Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE and Turkey - in addition to Syria and Iran). Sales grew in variety, size and value. The growth was doubled due to entering new markets, and by increasing sales to traditional partners. How can this increase in interest in Russian arms be explained in such a short time?
The Russian military-industrial complex (MIC) demonstrated its best opportunities in Syria, deploying a huge number of weapons systems of ship, air and ground based. In addition, for Moscow, the Syrian conflict has become the main testing ground. According to various statements by Russian officials, in Syria, 60 to 200 new weapons were tested for the first time.
Demonstration of effectiveness on the battlefield is the best advertisement for any weapon system. In 2017, Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said: "Russian weapons can not be overemphasized. Customers began to line up for weapons systems, which have proven themselves in Syria. "
The real "stars" of military operations in Syria are the heavy supersonic strategic bomber Tu-160 and the multifunctional fighter-bomber of the new generation of Su-34. In addition, the T-90 tanks, Ka-52 combat helicopters and BMPT-72 combat fire fighting vehicles were used in combat operations (defense of the Russian military base base). With the exception of the S-400 systems, all weapons that are now the subject of negotiations or sales transactions were first tested in combat conditions in Syria.
As for the S-400, although the Triumph system was deployed in Syria, it was not used in combat yet. Despite this, interest in it is also growing. Demonstrating the capabilities of these systems in action is certainly a strong argument in favor of buying, but there are other factors that explain the popularity of Russian weapons.
Russian weapons are always highly efficient and economical. In areas where Russia lags behind technological innovation, it compensates for shortcomings with low costs. American (and Western) companies adhere to a more stringent process of controlling arms exports, and arms sales to third world countries are often associated with certain political conditions. Therefore, the Middle Eastern countries prefer to avoid uncertainty and bureaucracy under certain circumstances, choosing a simpler version of interaction with other suppliers, such as Russia.
The growth in demand for Russian arms in the Middle East is also observed at the same time as the region's growing doubts about the degree of loyalty and loyalty of the US government to them. It is no wonder that Moscow now sees for itself an excellent opportunity to increase its influence in the Middle East.
After making a decision to support Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia has consistently worked to develop ties with major countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia or Egypt, and has indeed become a key regional player. The export of arms is one of the ways to establish closer ties based on mutually beneficial cooperation: Moscow expresses its readiness to provide impressive discounts and loans to its regional partners.
Russia also continues to maintain ties with its traditional partners, primarily with Algeria and Iran. Algeria is the permanent and largest buyer of Russian weapons in Africa. With Iran, things are more complicated, as the import of most weapons was banned by the UN embargo from 2010 to 2015. Russia was forced to cancel or suspend sales to Iran for almost five years. After the conclusion of the Iranian nuclear deal in 2015 and the lifting of the arms embargo, Russia quickly restored all business ties.
Over the past few years, Moscow has significantly increased its influence in the region and has been able to attract great interest in its military technologies.
1 The organization is prohibited on the territory of the Russian Federation.
