The M1A1 Tank Special Armor and other special armors used in the hull and turret are classified at the Secret level. Major components of special armor are fabricated in sealed modules and in serialized removable subassemblies. Special armor components and associated vulnerability data for both chemical and kinetic energy rounds are classified Secret.

https://www.federalregister.gov/article ... ation#p-24
Transmittal No. 12-28
Notice of Proposed Issuance of Letter of Offer
Pursuant to Section 36(b)(1)
of the Arms Export Control Act
Annex
Item No. vii

(vii) Sensitivity of Technology:
1. The M1A1 Abrams Tanks components considered to contain sensitive
technology in the proposed program are as follows:

a. The M1A1 Thermal Imaging System (TIS) 2nd Gen Forward Looking
Infrared (FLIR)
constitutes a target acquisition system which, when operated with other
tank systems, gives the tank crew a substantial advantage over the potential threat. The
TIS provides the M1A1 crew with the ability to effectively aim and fire the tank main
armament system under a broad range of adverse battlefield conditions. The hardware
itself is Unclassified. The engineering design and manufacturing data associated with the
detector and infrared (IR) optics and coatings are considered sensitive. The technical
data package is Unclassified with the exception of the specifications for target acquisition
range (Confidential), nuclear hardening (Confidential, restricted data) and laser
hardening (Secret).

b. The M1A1 Tank Special Armor and other special armors used in the hull
and turret are classified at the Secret level.
Major components of Special Armor are
fabricated in sealed modules and in serialized removable subassemblies. Special
Armor components and associated vulnerability data for both chemical and kinetic
energy rounds are classified Secret.

c. The use of the Advanced Gas Turbine-1500 (AGT-1500) Gas Turbine
Propulsion System in the MlA1 is a unique application of armored vehicle power
pack technology.
The hardware is composed of the AGT-1500 engine and
transmission
, and is Unclassified. Manufacturing processes associated with the
production of turbine blades, recuperator, bearings and shafts, and hydrostatic pump
and motor, are proprietary and therefore commercially competition sensitive.

d. A major survivability feature of the Abrams Tank is the
compartmentalization of fuel and ammunition. Compartmentalization is the positive
separation of the crew and critical components from combustible materials.
In the event
that the fuel or ammunition is ignited or deteriorated by an incoming threat round, the
crew is fully protected by the compartmentalization.
Sensitive information includes the
performance of the ammunition compartments as well as the compartment design
parameters.

2. If a technologically advanced adversary were to obtain knowledge of the
specific hardware and software elements, the information could be used to develop
countermeasures or equivalent systems which might reduce weapon system effectiveness
or be used in the development of a system with similar or advanced capabilities.

AGT-1500 :goodnews1: for us
using a turbine engine in a desertic environment is a stupid choise  (the vulnerability to sand, high fuel consumption rate, huge thermal signature...)

The abrams was chosen for Egypt by the USA and Mubarak regime to make sure that Israel would be advantageous in any future conflict in Sinai desert, that why their military proposel to replace the turbofan by a Ukrainian diesel engine was refused.
As for Saudi Arabia and Koweit, their Abrams are used by the national guard to protect the monarchies from military coups (urban envirement) and remains most of the time in storage near the capitals and royal palaces. Why do you think the Kuwaiti Army is upgrading its M-84 and the Saudis are buying 800 Leos, because they know that the Honeywell gas turbine engines can't resist the effects of sand and dust. For exemple in the desert during the Gulf war in 1991, US M1A1 Abrams tanks burnt four times more fuel than British Challenger IIs did and when there was a sandstorm in the desert, and the air filters of the M1A1 tanks lasted only for 15 min. Then the tanks had to stop. At the same time, the Syrian division that was part of the coalition forces was conducting a 1,000-km march on its T-62 tanks. During the march, not a single tank stopped for technical reasons, let alone due to the air inlet balled up with sand that's why in the tender conducted by Turkey for a tank to field with its army. At the request of the Turkish military, an M1A1's turbine powerplant was replaced with the German-built EuroPowerPack fitted with a diesel of the same power

The 2nd Generation Forward Looking InfraRed sighting system (2nd Gen FLIR) will replace the existing Thermal Image System (TIS) and the Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer. The incorporation of 2nd Gen FLIR into the M1A2 tank will require replacement of all 1st Gen FLIR components. From the warfighter perspective, this is one of the key improvements on the SEP. The 2nd Gen FLIR is a fully integrated engagement-sighting system designed to provide the gunner and tank commander with significantly improved day and night target acquisition and engagement capability. This system allows 70% better acquisition, 45% quicker firing and greater accuracy. In addition, a gain of 30% greater range for target acquisition and identification will increase lethality and lessen fratricide.

http://www.opex360.com/2012/02/18/la-ru ... -lalgerie/
je peux dire que:

2nd Gen FLIR Made in USA = 3nd Gen FLIR Made in russia/france/israel ,en capacité et qualité.

Je pense que les Américains s'attendent à équiper le future M1A3 avec 3nd Gen FLIR,le M1A3 ne verra pas la lumière jusqu'en 2014.

Avec des intentions pacifiques :hadarat:
