Algeria and UAE to jointly produce armoured vehicles in Algeria

Algeria and the United Arab Emirates have signed an agreement to jointly produce NIMR armoured vehicles in Algeria.

The agreement was signed on July 19 between the Algerian Ministry of Defence's Mechanical Industry Promotion Group and the United Arab Emirates' (UAE's) Tawazun Holdings. Under the agreement, the NIMR-Algerie Joint Stock Company will be established in Khenchela in the northeast of the country, reports the Algerian Press Service.

The director of Military Industries at the Algerian Defence Ministry, Rachid Chouaki, said that the Algeria-Emirati partnership is based on “principle of trust linking the two brotherly countries.” The establishment of the plant in Algeria is expected to create between 400 and 500 jobs.

Tawazun subsidiary NIMR Automotive, based in Abu Dhabi, produces a family of interoperable 4x4 and 6x6 armoured vehicles with a common chassis. They are configured for various missions, including reconnaissance, border surveillance, logistics, urban warfare, ambulance, command and control and as an armoured personnel carrier.

The 4x4 model can have a single or double cab and a weapons platform or personnel carrier hull. The 6x6 version comes in short, medium or long wheelbase iterations. The 13.5 tonne 6x6 model can carry up to five tonnes.

Armour protection is equivalent to STANAG 4569 Level 1 (it can withstand 7.62 x 51 ball ammunition at 30 metres), but armour kits can upgrade protection to Level 3 or 4.

The CEO of Tawazun subsidiary Burkan, Saeed Al Mansouri, told Shephard Media at Eurosatory last month that the NIMR is completely designed and manufactured in the UAE, apart from the engine and gearbox.

Hamad Al Neyadi, Chief Strategic Officer of Tawazun and Chairman of Nimr Automotive, said he wants to establish a globally recognised defence automotive business. He was speaking at the International Armoured Vehicles conference in the UK in February, reports the Emirates News Agency. As part of its expansion plans, Tawazun aims to increase its workforce by 4-500 employees each year (from 3 000 at present).

More than 500 NIMR vehicles have been delivered to customers including Libya, Jordan, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates, while more than 1 800 are on order. The United Arab Emirates armed forces signed a contract for 200 vehicles in March.

Tawazun signs new JV to manufacture Nimr vehicles in Algeria :

Tawazun Holding, the steadily growing manufacturer which is helping to build the industrial backbone of the UAE, has expanded its presence in the African defense market by inking of a joint venture (JV) agreement with Groupement de la Promotion de l'IndustrieMécanique (GPIM),a company under the Algerian Ministry of National Defense's Direction des Fabrications Militaires(DFM),designed to create a new Algerian-based armored vehicle manufacturer. GPIM is the main automotive industrial arm of DFM.

The joint venture- which will see the new company produce UAE-designed armored vehicles in Algeria under license from Nimr - means that the UAE is now exporting its advanced defense technology know-how to other markets around the world. The agreement also allows Tawazun easier access to the African defense market, opening up new commercial opportunities for the fast-growing strategic manufacturer.

The newly created company will initially target producing more than 200 4x4 armored vehicles after its set-up is complete.

One of Tawazun's twelve subsidiaries, Nimr is a defense vehicle manufacturer based in Abu Dhabi which provides a portfolio of armored vehicle products to address the various needs of global armed forces and internal security organizations.

The new JV with GPIM is entering into agreements with Nimr Automotive to transfer the technology and manufacturing know-how needed to assemble and produce two versions of the 4x4 armored vehicles in Algeria.

The Nimr UAE team will also work with its Algerian counterpart on human capability training and development to build up the skills of the over 300 Algerian workforce. The JV will, over time, produce several major components in Algeria while certain UAE-made components needed to assemble the cars will be supplied to it by Nimr Automotive.

H.E Saif Al Hajeri, CEO of Tawazun Holding, said: "As the defense manufacturing industry becomes increasingly competitive globally, it is vital for manufacturers to seek out new ways of expanding their business. We've selected DFM as a partner due to its high standards that match our own, as well as Algeria being a gateway to reach other African markets which could promote new partnership opportunities for us in the near future."

H.E Al Hajeri continued: "It is a credit to our nation's development that defense products made in the UAE are becoming rapidly synonymous with innovative design and high quality. Being able to export home-grown technological know-how into another market within a short space of time is a big achievement for Nimr, and we are highly confident that this JV will complement the excellent reputation that the UAE-based operation is developing with defense product buyers and users in the region and beyond."

The JV will produce two variations of Nimr 4x4 vehicles to meet the requirements of the Algerian market over the next 15 years for a demand forecast of 2,500 cars, with the aim to potentially supply other customers in the region.

Director of the DFM,Major General Rachid Chouaki, commented:"This partnership will allow us to take quality vehicle design, functionality and innovation to new levels for the benefit of our customers, and will help further strengthen the already strong relationship that exists between the two countries.Working with Tawazun, we are confident that together we can build and train a work force which is capable of equipping our army and defense personnel with top-of-the-line armored Nimr vehicles fit for the region'sharsh terrain."

Hamad Al Neyadi, Chairman of Nimr Automotive, stated: "The agreement will see us provide the manufacturing licenses needed for the newly created company to be the main supplier of armored vehicles for the Algerian military,as well as generate the potential to develop products for customers across the African continent. The JV will work on final assembly on a number of vehicles and we anticipate that following the completion of the technical facility and personnel training, we will have a set up ready to fully produce 4x4 Nimr vehicles by the end of 2014."

Cette infographie illustre juste les possibilité offertes par ce véhicule, mais cette version ne sera pas forcément en dotation dans l'ANP. Sauf si une version avec radar terrestre est d'une quelconque utilité pour les unités de reconnaissance

ça me surprend aussi! Sauf si ils ont choisi des infrastructures existantes (et qu'ils sont en bon état et bien équipés!) pour abriter le centre de production (je crois que akramov à parler dans son blog des locaux de l' EX SNLB ? )
