Le Portugal annule ses prévisions de commandes de nouveaux OPV

Contrainte de réduire ses dépenses, dans un contexte économique et budgétaire difficile pour le pays, la marine portugaise a annulé ses prévisions de commandes de nouveaux patrouilleurs hauturiers (OPV). Quatre unités du type NPO 2000 devaient, en effet, être notifiées cette année, afin de poursuivre le remplacement des 7 corvettes des types Baptista de Andrade et Joao Countinho. Le premier NPO 2000, le Viana do Castelo, a été lancé en 2005 mais n’a été admis au service actif qu’en 2011. Ce bâtiment a été suivi d’un premier sistership, le Figueira da Fos, mis également à flot en 2005, avant que deux patrouilleurs supplémentaires soient commandés en 2009.
Longs de 83 mètres pour une largeur de 23 mètres, ces OPV de 1600 tonnes en charge, construits par les chantiers de Viana do Castelo, sont armés par 35 marins et peuvent accueillir une trentaine de passagers. Leur armement comprend un canon de 40mm et des mitrailleuses.

Le Portugal récupère le dernier P-3C CUP+ Orion après modernisation chez Lockheed-Martin



Le Portugal dispose de 5 P-3C CUP+ Orion de patrouille maritime, ce sont des appareils d'occasion acquis auprès des pays bas et modernisés aux termes d'un contrat de 99.7 millions $ avec Lockheed Martin (2 aux USA et 3 au Portugal par OGMA-Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal).
Les modifications apportées par ce format sont:

Elta Systems EL/M 2022A(V)3 multi-mode maritime surveillance radar, L-3 Wescam MX-15 HDi imaging system, ALR-95 electronic support measures system, AAR-47 missile warning system, ALE-47 counter measure dispensing system and USQ-78B acoustic sensor.

l'avion pourra également tirer des AGM-84 Harpoon, AGM-65 Maverick, des torpilles Mk-46 Mod 5, des charges anti-sous-marines et des bombes.
Ces appareils remplaceront 6 P-3P Orion anciens P-3B Orion australiens des années 80's modernisés au format P.

General Dynamics Canada to Provide Sonar System Upgrades to Portuguese Navy


Upgrades will significantly improve Portugal's ability to detect and localize potential threats on or under the surface of the water
OTTAWA, Ontario, April 14, 2014 /CNW/ - General Dynamics Canada is installing an adjunct processing system on three VASCO DA GAMA-class frigates of the Portuguese Navy. Designed by General Dynamics Canada, the ECLIPSE adjunct processor provides the in-service AN/SQS-510 sonar systems with enhanced operational capability to detect submarines and torpedoes.

The ECLIPSE processing system will work in parallel with the AN/SQS-510, leveraging the data collected from the existing sonar system. The addition of the ECLIPSE processing system will significantly improve the ability to detect and characterize echoes and sounds transmitted through the water to determine location and physical characteristics of potential threats.

In addition, ECLIPSE provides new ways of displaying the processed sonar information, with greater detail in a simplified format that allows operators to detect contacts earlier, and with more clarity than before. The information is displayed on new, state-of-the-art high-resolution flat panel monitors. The system also provides enhanced capabilities for training as well as record and replay of acoustic data. All of these improvements are installed without enlarging the footprint or weight of the system in the ship, or increasing the number of sonar operators.

The AN/SQS-510 medium-frequency hull-mounted sonar is currently in service on all twelve Royal Canadian Navy HALIFAX-class patrol frigates and three IROQUOIS-class destroyers. The system is also in use in ships of the Portuguese and Bulgarian navies.
