The U.S. Air Force’s 3rd Wing announced on his Facebook page that the new GAU-5A Aircrew Self Defense Weapon will increase the firepower of the F-22 fighter jet pilots if they ever have to eject over enemy territory.

The post reads, “Thank you 673 SFS for showing our F-22 leaders the new GAU-5 that will increase the firepower of our pilots if they ever have to eject over enemy territory.”

The newest GAU-5A is a compact conversion of standard M4 carbines, specially designed to be stowed aboard the U.S. Air Force combat aircraft.

New rifles have a compact size, firepower, high reliability and reduced signature. It’s designed to fit into the standard survival kit under the ejection seat for downed fighter and bomber crews if they are ever shot down behind enemy lines.

As a bases M4 carbine, the GAU-5A uses standard 5.56mm ammunition with an effective range beyond 200m. The weapon can be assembled/disassembled in 60 seconds without tools.

Prior to the introduction of this weapon system, pilots who found themselves in a downed-aircraft scenario were forced to rely on their personal sidearm for self defense.

Northrop Grumman has delivered to the U.S. Army the first production-representative engagement operations center for the Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Battle Command System (IBCS) on FMTV chassis. (Picture source: Northrop Grumman)

“This milestone is a testament of the significant progress toward operational capability that will make pivotal differences to warfighters, commanders and acquisition officials,” said Dan Verwiel, vice president and general manager, missile defense and protective systems, Northrop Grumman. “We will be delivering more EOCs as well as IBCS integrated fire control network (IFCN) relays in the near future. These articles will be used for initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&E), which informs future production decisions.”

The delivered IBCS EOC has completed all functional configuration audits for major configuration items and system verification review, and is representative of the production configuration for hardware and software that will undergo qualification testing before IOT&E. Northrop Grumman is on pace to deliver 11 EOCs and 18 IFCN relays for the IBCS program by the end of the year.

“Northrop Grumman will continue to closely collaborate with our customer and user communities to realize the groundbreaking vision of IBCS and its transformative impact on the air and missile defense mission,” said Verwiel.

IBCS is a paradigm shift for IAMD by replacing legacy stove-piped systems with a next-generation, net-centric approach to better address an evolving array of threats. The system integrates disparate radars and weapons to construct a far more effective IAMD enterprise. IBCS delivers a single integrated air picture with unprecedented accuracy as well as broader surveillance and protection areas. With its truly open systems architecture, IBCS allows incorporation of current and future sensors and effectors and enables interoperability with joint C2 and the ballistic missile defense system.

IBCS is managed by the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Missiles and Space, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

BAE and Lockheed Martin to deliver Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles to US Air Force

BAE Systems worked closely with Lockheed Martin to deliver Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM) to the U.S. Air Force, achieving Early Operational Capability (EOC) for the B1-B bomber ahead of schedule. The Air Force accepted delivery of production LRASM units following successful simulation, integration, and flight tests that demonstrated the missile’s mission readiness.

BAE Systems’ long-range sensor and targeting technology enables LRASM to detect and engage protected ships in all weather conditions, day or night, without relying on external intelligence and navigation data (Picture source: BAE Systems)

“We’re quickly delivering critical capabilities to warfighters to meet their urgent operational needs,” said Bruce Konigsberg, Radio Frequency (RF) Sensors product area director at BAE Systems. “Our sensor systems provide U.S. warfighters with a strike capability that lets them engage protected, high-value maritime targets from safe distances. The missile provides a critical advantage to U.S. warfighters.”

BAE Systems’ long-range sensor and targeting technology enables LRASM to detect and engage protected ships in all weather conditions, day or night, without relying on external intelligence and navigation data.

BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin are working closely together to further mature the LRASM technology. The companies recently signed a contract for the production of more than 50 additional sensors and are working to achieve EOC on the U.S. Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in 2019.

The advanced LRASM sensor technology builds on BAE Systems’ expertise in electronic warfare (EW), signal processing, and targeting technologies, and demonstrates the company’s ability to apply its world-class EW technology to small platforms. The successful LRASM sensor program demonstrates the company’s ability to quickly deliver advanced EW technology to warfighters.

As part of the company’s electronic warfare capacity expansion initiatives, it locates key programs where they will be optimally staffed to quickly transition from design to production, accelerate deliveries, and improve product affordability. The company’s work on the LRASM program is conducted at state-of-the-art facilities in Wayne, New Jersey and Nashua, New Hampshire, where it benefits from highly skilled EW engineering and manufacturing workforces.

US Navy orders Reaper ISR services for the Marine Corps

The US Navy has recently awarded a contract to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) services through the use of Group 5 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to a Defense Department contract announcement, on May 30, Naval Air Systems Command awarded GA-ASI a $US 36.5 million contract modification to provide ISR services with contractor-owned/contractor-operated MQ-9 Reaper UAVs, the same UAV used by the US Air Force.

The Marine Corps extensively has used contractor ISR services in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, with the smaller Insitu ScanEagle, and has employed its new service-owned Boeing Insitu RQ-21A Blackjack UAV in the same roles. The use of the larger Reaper is filling a gap in ISR coverage for the Marine Corps.

The Corps has developed a requirement for its own Reapers and has requested two in the fiscal 2020 defence budget. The current contract modification is for nine months of Reaper services, scheduled to run through February 2020 at overseas locations and at Yuma, Arizona.

Russian Navy Ship Maneuvers Unsafe, Unprofessional

PHILIPPINE SEA (June 07, 2019) - At approximately 11:45 am on June 7, 2019 while operating in the Philippine Sea, a Russian destroyer (Udaloy I DD 572) made an unsafe maneuver against USS Chancellorsville (CG-62), closing to ~50-100 feet putting the safety of her crew and ship at risk.

While Chancellorsville was recovering its helicopter on a steady course and speed when the Russian ship DD572 maneuvered from behind and to the right of Chancellorsville accelerated and closed to an unsafe distance of ~50-100 feet. This unsafe action forced Chancellorsville to execute all engines back full and to maneuver to avoid collision.

We consider Russia's actions during this interaction as unsafe and unprofessional and not in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS), "Rules of the Road," and internationally recognized maritime customs.

USS Independence, USS Pinckney arrive for Portland Fleet Week
2019060704.jpg
USS Pinckney (DDG 91) and USS Independence (LCS 2) arrived in Portland, June 6, for the 111th annual Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week, which runs through through June 9.

The Portland visit gives the public a chance to gain a better understanding of how the sea services support the national defense of the United States and freedom of the seas.

USS Pinckney (DDG 91) prepares to moor in Portland for Portland Fleet Week June 6, 2019. The annual event is a time-honored celebration of the sea services and provides an opportunity for the citizens of Oregon to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. (U.S. Navy photo by Chief Mass Communication Specialist Alan Gragg)
“We are happy to be back in Portland for this year’s Rose Festival Fleet Week,” said Read Adm. Scott Gray, commander of Navy Region Northwest. “This is a great opportunity for the sea services to show the great citizens of Portland their Navy and meet the outstanding men and women who work hard and serve at great personal sacrifice to keep our nation secure.”

Pinckney and Independence, along with four U.S. Coast Guard vessels and two ships from the Royal Canadian Navy, will be offering public tours and participating in the annual festivities. The public is encouraged to attend tours and interact with Sailors.

Throughout the week, Sailors will have an opportunity to enjoy premier events of the festival including the Centennial Grand Floral Parade, which features all-floral floats, live music, food, entertainment, marching bands and culinary competition among ships.

Lt. j.g. Anna Vargas, public affairs officer of USS Pinckney said this is her first Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week and that she is looking forward to interacting with individuals who have not had much experience with the U.S. Navy and spread awareness of their roles at sea.

Navy warships have been coming to the City of Roses since USS Charleston’s visit in 1907 and are considered a highlight of the festival.

Gray stated in a press conference June 4 that the U.S. Navy is proud to be a part of Portland’s Fleet Week and the mission could not be met without the support of our communities. He also thanked the people of Oregon for their support of the Navy.
