America’s Super Submarine Aircraft-Carrier (AN-1) could be held again

America’s Super Submarine Aircraft-Carrier (AN-1) could be held again. The U.S. Navy Could Have Had a Submarine Aircraft Carrier (AN-1) that could launch 8 fighter jets in 8 minutes

During the 1950s, the advent of the atomic age forced the U.S. Navy to look at a number of alternate basing schemes for naval aviation. One such scheme was AN-1, an enormous nuclear-powered submarine that could launch eight fighter jets in just under eight minutes.

AN-1 would have been a large submarine, nearly 500 feet long with a beam of 44 feet. It would have had an underwater speed of 16 knots, and thanks to a 15,000-horsepower shipboard nuclear power plant, could have cruised to any point on earth. The submarine would have had six bow-mounted torpedo tubes and two rear-firing tubes.

AN-1 was a concept ahead of its time. Today, the increase of high-tech threats against aircraft carriers, including hypersonic weapons and anti-ship ballistic missiles, could force them to adapt and go underwater, just like the Navy was considering 60 years ago. Unmanned aerial vehicles, launched and recovered from submarines could someday perform many of the same missions performed by carrier aircraft.

The United States already builds drones and submarines far larger than AN-1, and it may be just a matter of time before it combines the two into a stealthy and lethal package.

How To Call A fighter jet For Close Air Support -JTAC in action

Let’s see How To Call A fighter jet For Close Air Support -JTAC in action
We will also tell you about What is Close Air Support? and who are Joint terminal attack controller?

In the above video, you can see a Joint Terminal Attack Controllers from Washington National Guard’s 116th Air Support Operations Squadron, 194th Wing, traveled to the Utah Test and Training Range to sharpen their skills of controlling fighter jets in close air support.

Let’s see how he Calls A F 35 For Close Air Support
What is Close Air Support?

Close air support (CAS) is air action by fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft against hostile targets that are in close proximity to friendly forces and requires detailed integration of each air mission with the fire and movement of those forces.

who is Joint terminal attack controller?
joint Terminal Attack Controller is the term used by military forces for a qualified service member who directs the action of combat aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations from a forward position.

US Marines Use Android Tablets To Call In Air Strikes

Marines from MAWTS-1 conducted and organized Digitally Aided Close Air Support (DACAS) fire missions

He is using Target Handoff System tablets at Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range, California.

The exercises were conducted during Weapons and Tactics Instructors course 1-18.

WTI is a course that brings service members from all across the world to participate in training that teaches pilots, air crew and ground forces to work together to benefit the Marine Air Ground Task Force.

They can relay their position to artillery and aerial support using GPS location and indicate where their target is.

The tablet connects to a PRC-117G radio to use voice communication in conjunction with GPS.

“We were sending VMF messages to (F/A-18D’s) using THS and on the same tablet we had a 117G hooked in with an ANW2 network,” said Gunnery Sgt. Andrew Rogers, a joint tactical air controller with Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1. “So we were able to track position/location information of multiple friendly positions while they moved”

Rogers said this helps the ground units by sending direct and accurate information to fire support.

This is the first time these systems have been integrated and fielded for a Marine Corps exercise.

Start of US Air Force’s light-attack plane competition pushed back until next year
By: Valerie Insinna   20 hours ago

The Sierra Nevada Corp.-Embraer A-29 Super Tucano, left, and Textron AT-6B Wolverine are the likely contenders for the Air Force's light-attack aircraft competition. (Ethan Wagner/U.S. Air Force)
WASHINGTON — If the U.S. Air Force moves forward on a proposed initiative to buy light-attack planes, it won’t happen by the end of 2018.

The service intended to put out a final request for proposals this month for a potential light-attack aircraft program, but the date has now slipped into 2019, an Air Force official confirmed Tuesday.

“The Air Force does not anticipate release of the final Light Attack Request for Proposal by the end of the calendar year as we complete additional analysis,” Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Hope Cronin said in an emailed response to Defense News.

The light-attack aircraft competition will be down to two competitors
The light-attack aircraft competition will be down to two competitors
The U.S. Air Force put out a pre-solicitation for its light-attack aircraft program ... but it's still not ready to say it will definitely buy new aircraft.

By: Valerie Insinna
The service released a draft solicitation on Aug. 3, following two experimentation campaigns that brought the Sierra Nevada Corp.-Embraer A-29 Super Tucano, Textron’s Scorpion jet and AT-6 attack plane, and L3’s AT-802L Longsword to Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico for several rounds of test flights.

The second set of flight experiments between the A-29 and AT-6 were curtailed this summer after an A-29 crashed, killing its pilot. However, the Air Force maintained that it could garner the data it needed on aircraft maintenance and network operations while testing the planes on the ground.

Air Force acquisition officials have shied away from declaring whether a program of record will begin in the fiscal 2020 budget, but the August presolicitation seems to limit the contenders to the A-29 and AT-6, stating that SNC and Textron “are the only firms that appear to possess the capability necessary to meet the requirement within the Air Force’s time frame without causing an unacceptable delay in meeting the needs of the warfighter.”

The goal of the light-attack experiments is to prove whether the Air Force can quickly bring industry to the table to experiment with off the shelf equipment and rapidly make a decision about whether to buy it.

In that light, the delay in releasing the final request for proposals is at least a slight setback, as it’s unclear whether the wait for a final RFP could also push back the Air Force’s proposed due date for awarding a contract — before the start of the 2020 fiscal year on Oct. 1.

But it remains unclear whether the Air Force will have the money to buy it. Officials have maintained that a light-attack capability is “additive," meaning that they would not be willing to sacrifice procurement dollars designated for aircraft in existing or planned programs of record so that it could buy the AT-6 or A-29.

Modernization top priority in FY20 budget, Pentagon’s No. 2 official says
Modernization top priority in FY20 budget, Pentagon’s No. 2 official says
Still no word on the final top line for the Defense Department's fiscal 2020 budget.

By: Valerie Insinna
However, the Pentagon’s top-line budget is still uncertain. Defense Department budget officials had geared up for a $733 billion budget in FY20, only to have President Donald Trump call for a cut to $700 billion. Now, it appears that number is growing after intervention from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and congressional hawks, and could be as high as $750 billion.

Whether the light-attack aircraft program fits into any of those top-line budgets is currently unknown.

How F-22 Raptor flew under two Iran F-4 Phantom who tries to intercept an MQ-1 drone
The incident began over a drone, and luckily, no one started shooting

In 2013, two Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms moved to intercept an MQ-1 drone flying in international airspace near the Iranian border. The two IRIAF fighters were quickly shooed away by two F-22 Raptors who were flying in escort.

one of the two F-4 Phantom jets came to about 16 miles from the Predator, but broke off pursuit after two American planes escorting the drone broadcast a warning message.

The two F-22 Raptors were escorting the drone because of an incident the previous year in which two Iranian Air Force Sukhoi Su-25 close air support craft attempted to shoot down a different Air Force MQ-1. In the Nov. 1, 2012, incident, the drone was 16 miles from Iran, but still in international airspace. Iran scrambled the two Su-25s to intercept the drone, which they did, using their onboard guns.

New details about the incident disclosed by Air Force chief of staff Gen. Mark Welsh at an annual conference of the Air Force Association. On Sept. 17, the general not only confirmed that the escorting fighters were F-22 stealth fighters but also said that: “He [the Raptor pilot] flew under their aircraft [the F-4s] to check out their weapons load without them knowing that he was there, and then pulled up on their left wing and then called them and said ‘you really ought to go home.’”
