Why does the US have 800 military bases in 80 Countries around the world?

The US has around 800 military bases in other countries, which costs an estimated $100 billion annually, a number that could be much higher depending on whether you count the bases still open in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is according to American University professor David Vine in his forthcoming book Base Nation, in which he seeks to quantify the financial, environmental, and human costs of keeping these bases open.

The word “base” is a broad term that captures all sorts of military posts, stations, camps, forts, etc. around the globe. The Pentagon specifics that a “base site” is any geographic location that is “owned by or leased to, or otherwise possessed” by the military.

Most of these bases cropped up after World War II when the US took a position as the global leader and peacekeeper in and around Japan and Germany. The Korean and Cold Wars sped up the expansion of US military infrastructure to other countries. Containing Soviet communism led the US to set up posts all over the globe to ensure a geopolitical foothold in places that were vulnerable to Soviet influence — which basically meant everywhere.

:nooo:

USAF B-52s ignore Beijing’s ‘great wall’ of missiles in the South China Sea
Les B-52 de l’USAF ignorent la "grande muraille" de Pékin dans la mer de Chine méridionale

USAF B-52s ignore Beijing’s ‘great wall’ of missiles in the South China Sea.

Two US heavy long-range bombers tore past Chinese-occupied territories in the contested South China Sea on Monday, demonstrating America’s determination to continue its activities in the region despite China’s militarization of disputed areas.

A pair of US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bombers out of Andersen Air Force Base on Guam conducted a routine training mission in the vicinity of the South China Sea, Pacific Air Forces told CNN on Tuesday, describing the mission as “consistent with international law and United States’ long-standing commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

The US military regularly sends bombers through the contested waterway in support of the deterrence-oriented Continuous Bomber Presence mission.

China, which claims the majority of the South China Sea, tends to typically react with sharp criticism of US activities, even when the US is simply transiting planes between its bases across the Pacific.

Beijing has previously called these flights “provocative,” accusing the US of militarizing the region, a counter to US accusations.

US intel chief to brief NATO on US withdrawal from INF treaty
Published on 28.11.2018 at 00h54 by AFP

US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Tuesday that he is heading to Europe to explain to allies Washington’s decision to pull out of a major nuclear weapons treaty because of Russian violations.

Coats told reporters that he will meet NATO defense and intelligence officials in Brussels this week to discuss President Donald Trump’s decision in October to withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), a move that has fueled fears of a dangerous arms race.

“The intelligence community assesses Russia has flight-tested, produced, and deployed cruise missiles with a range capability that are prohibited by the treaty,” Coats said.

“Russia has shown no sign that it is willing to acknowledge its violation, let alone return to full and verifiable compliance.”

Coats said he would explain the threat to Europe from Russia’s furtive development of its new 9M729 ground-based missile system, which Washington says has a reach that exceeds the INF limit of 500 kilometers (300 miles).

“Russia continues to press forward and as of late 2018 has fielded multiple battalions of 9M729 missiles, which pose a direct conventional and nuclear threat against most of Europe and parts of Asia,” Coats said.

The Trump administration has yet to pinpoint a date for its official withdrawal from the treaty, leaving room for a possible fix that would likely also have to involve China, which was not a party to the INF.

“Number one, they would have to admit that they cheated,” Coats said of Russia.

“Number two, they would have to acknowledge that they would then take actions to get us back on an even keel, so that (Russia) didn’t retain that strategic advantage” from the new missile program.

“We need full verifiable elimination of all missiles that fall in this category, if we’re going to go forward,” he said.

DARPA’s New microchip lets one pilot control multiple aircraft in the brain

DARPA’s New microchip lets one pilot control multiple aircraft in the brain

A person with a brain chip can now pilot a swarm of drones — or even advanced fighter jets, thanks to research funded by the U.S. military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA.

For the first time ever, DARPA has announced that it has demonstrated the use of telepathic thought from a human brain embedded with a specific kind of computer chip that allows a person to command and control simultaneously three types of drone aircraft by mental thoughts while watching the drones on a screen, as demonstrated in a DARPA simulator.

The work builds on research from 2015, which allowed a paralyzed woman to steer a virtual F-35 Joint Strike Fighter with only a small, surgically-implantable microchip. On Thursday, agency officials announced that they had scaled up the technology to allow a user to steer multiple jets at once.

Paratroopers Static Line Jump From C-17 Globemaster III

In the above video, you can see Paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division perform static line jumps from C-17 Globemaster III aircraft over Sicily Drop Zone at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
What is Static line jump?
A static line is a fixed cord attached to a large, stable object. It is used to open parachutes automatically for paratroopers and novice parachutists.

A static line is a cord attached at one end to the aircraft and at the other end to the top of the jumper’s ‘D-Bag’

The parachutist’s fall from the aircraft causes the static line to become taut

This then pulls the D-Bag out of the container on the jumper’s back.

The static line and D-Bag stay with the aircraft as the jumper leaves and is pulled back into the aircraft by the dispatcher.
