deployment for desaster....
Full Sahel anti-jihadist force set to deploy, says Niger’s defence minister

A new five-nation force is ready to deploy to fight jihadists in the Sahel region of northwestern Africa, Niger’s defence minister said on Sunday.

The G5 Sahel counter-terrorist force aims to fight armed extremist groups that have carried out deadly attacks across the region.

Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger agreed last year to set up the 5,000-strong force.

They will operate alongside thousands of French and UN forces already deployed in the region along the southern rim of the Sahara desert.

“We are ready to launch operations in the sense that all forces that make up the G5 Sahel are in place,” the minister, Kalla Moutari, said in Ouagadougou.

Defence ministers from the five countries were gathered in the Burkina Faso capital to formally finalise steps to bring the force up to its full strength.

“We have put in place the legal documents that govern the operations of this force on our territories,” Moutari said.

“It is now only a matter of timing, which will depend on the discretion of the military leaders.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last week urged the G5 countries to speed up the deployment.

The Sahel force was projected to be fully up and running in March but that deadline was missed, mainly because of problems with training and equipment, he said in a report to the UN Security Council.

new is that the Americans them self-thought they would die (I speculate so prior).
new is that the Americans got shot at by friendly troops during their rescue (another detail on their interoperability with local chain of command, resp. lack of it).

Following Niger ambush, Pentagon promises more air support in Africa

Nigerien armed forces conduct a convoy movement, key leader engagement and ambush exercise with U.S. forces during a training mission in Niger, Africa, in April. (Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Runser/Army)
When U.S. soldiers in Niger became involved in a firefight Oct. 4 with local militants, it took an hour and a half for the first unarmed American aircraft to arrive overhead.

The U.S. aircraft that arrived over the battlefield, near the village of Tongo Tongo, on the southwest border with Mali, wasn’t a strike platform or a medical evacuation helicopter, but instead an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance drone. Two French Mirage fighter jets arrived shortly afterward.

The French aircraft conducted four show-of-force flyovers “right at treetop level … driving the enemy forces away,” said Army Maj. Gen. Roger Cloutier Jr., U.S. Africa Command’s chief of staff, who oversaw the investigation into the shortfalls leading to the ambush.

While the French jets saved the lives of the remaining U.S. and Nigerien soldiers, it was too late for Staff Sgts. Bryan Black, Jeremiah Johnson and Dustin Wright and Sgt. La David Johnson. Those four were killed during the engagement.

The Defense Department conducted an investigation into the ambush and briefed reporters at the Pentagon Thursday. One result of the inquiry is that forces operating in Niger will get more U.S. Air Force air cover, and the frequency of ground missions will decrease.

”I won’t go into details here, but we have increased the firepower, we’ve increased the ISR capacity and we’ve increased various response times,” said Marine Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, Africa Command’s top leader.

“And what this has done is it’s allowed these teams perhaps to not to do the tempo that they would like,” he added. “But it provides adequate and more resourceful force protection measures in order to still keep up with the enemy forces on the ground. So we have beefed up a lot of things posture wise with regard to these forces.”

The Niger mission originally did have ISR drone coverage. But before December, Nigerien officials were not allowing U.S. drones to fly with armed warheads, even for defensive missions.

During the October mission, the team was participating in a capture or kill operation against a high-value militant leader named Dondou Chefou. The reconnaissance drone had been “soaking” the village where he was thought to be for roughly six hours.

“They determined that the site was cold,” Waldhauser said. But that site wasn’t where the battle took place.

After determining Chefou was not at the objective, the team tasked their drone to head north and watch crossing points on Niger’s nearby border with Mali.

The troops then began to leave the area, but stopped on their way back at the village of Tongo Tongo, where they replenished their water supply and held an impromptu meeting with village elders.

Had there still been a drone providing over-watch for the team, they may have been forewarned about the enemy ambush that had staged along their departure route — a force outnumbering the U.S. and Nigerien soldiers three to one.

Since the incident, Pentagon leadership has limited special operations missions that could result in enemy contact. Missions need a “strategic value” and must target groups that pose a “strategic threat“ to the United States, according to Waldhauser.

But even as ground missions shrink, air assets in the region are expected to continue growing.

The combination of scaled back ground operations and bulked up air cover will, it is hoped, ensure missions that do get approved in the future are properly resourced.

“The majority of DoD personnel in Niger are supporting air operations at the airfield in Niamey, or at an airfield in Agadez,” which is still under construction, said Robert Karem, the assistant defense secretary for international security affairs. “The establishment of the Agadez airfield will help provide additional ISR coverage in the region.”

Air Force officials have described the construction of Niger Air Base 201, on the edge of the Sahara Desert, as the largest US troop labor construction project in history.

MQ-9 Reapers, operated by the Air Force’s 323rd Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron, are reportedly already flying out of the base in Agadez, but eventually, the entire drone operation in Niamey will move there. They are expected to target several different al-Qaida and Islamic State group-affiliated fighters in countries throughout the Sahel, a sprawling region just south of the Sahara, including the area around Lake Chad, where Nigeria’s Boko Haram insurgency has spread.

Three hangars and the first layers of a runway have been completed at Niger Air Base 201, which is expected to be fully functional early next year. The base will eventually also house fighter jets. The drones, with surveillance and added striking capabilities, will have a range enabling them to reach a number of West and North African countries.

The base will eventually also house fighter jets.
and from the airforcetimes. In other words that is like a statement from Mattis or Waldhauser himself; almost officiel.
False. It is not a governmental magazine. "Almost officiel" means nothing.
Will it be F16, F35 or else...? My worries seemed to be justified from the beginning, including the options to REMOVE that US-base.
I am really curious...unless you want to keep your plan secret, how would you do that?
I wonder where is the Algerian journalists dissecting all implications?
Doing their duties and informing the people and putting pressure on the “faut garder la stabilite” people in certain cercles.
If this continues we will walk once again with our head down, serving opportunistically foreign masters.
My conscience is clear, at my level I do what I can. I guess others need to show some courage and leadership.

Are you real??
YEP all good here.

1) The magazine is out there since 1947, made for the air force personal. And with a deep-rooted network within the air force.

2) Yes, removing is the right word. Some Zionist countries remove some military infrastructure in other countries, which they dislike the whole time. I proposed 3 ways.
Turks also do their thing and there are no consequences to them from US. Thus, why can’t we do the same?
3) Foreign media do cover a lot on the topic, however national media talking about the implications and security concerns for Algeria, are silent. That is an issue.

PS: Out of curiosity, what is your positions on the topic? I am eager to know.
And don t worry. I won’t ask "are you real" . I will try to grasp your underlying thoughts and per default I expect you to be a gentle and educated person in front of me. Ditto ;)

That does not prove it is a government-issued magazine because it is not. Unless you live in the united States you can't understand that folks, fans or former military get together and setup something, be it an association, a magazine, a website, a TV channel whatever. It is not unique to military.

i asked "how would you do that?". The base (or bases) is in a foreign country let alone american, the no.1 military power.
You can always wish to see it removed, which is different.
3) Foreign media do cover a lot on the topic, however national media talking about the implications and security concerns for Algeria, are silent. That is an issue.
our 'limited' media can't cover everything although i do not read DZ news everyday, so i can't really comment more. Covering it on the other hand won't change a thing. As i told you last last time, the base (or bases) is in a sovereign country. Who are we to meddle? We are not the US. Unlike the US, our national security stops at the border. If we were a military power may be, but we are not.

you are talking to a 63 year-old man who has seen enough not to confuse reality with imagination. You can always imagine scenarios if that is what you are doing, but they remain baseless for the most part because you are relying on media only.

My opinion is that it is always a concern to see a troublemaker such as the US forces in your neighborhood. As long as they keep at bay, Algeria is ok. The region is not similar to what we have in the afghan-pakistan border areas. I expect coordination, and collaboration between the US and the ANP, and intelligence sharing in tracking terrorists. So far so good.
I read almost everything you posted and i think you worry too much. Not everything you read is necessarily true.

I am thankful for your answer. Some points I do share with you. However, from a non-naïve stand point, of course there is the high risk that the base will become over time a major multipurpose base. Its strategical position (also on a global level) is ideal and with Libyan airspace open they can use it as a central hub, even for operations outside Africa. And statement from US officials are worth….
Ramstein to Sicily to Agadez to Djibouti….

Below just some thoughts, which are of course controversial. Thus, let’s not discuss about them. But maybe to put them out there.
The “number one power” argument is somewhat unfounded. I gave the example of Turkey a NATO-ally which has different national interests and does not care much about shelling areas with US troops. They withdrew, correct?
I guess ANP would go about it differently, but we do not have “an Erdogan” i.e. political problem/leadership issue.
The other options are to support another rebellion, as much worse it can not get anyway. Lets call is polisario 2.
Or to support a regime change. DRS can work a little.
We could also invite the Chinese or the Russians to the party. I don’t mind. Today’s option (new).

…I shared a good bit of time with some US folks and most of them are mindless when it comes to foreign politics. It is hard for them to grasp, that their actions in most parts of the world cause strong adverse feeling.
Even though I am not 63 yet. Sometimes I wish to feel that close to retirement, I envy you for that. Stay well.
