The F-35 Could Intercept a N. Korean Missile Launch - but it Could Bring an All-Out Fight

https://youtu.be/27Z6lguewsY

At that point, why not shoot it down with an air-to-air missile from an F-35? The US Air Force has for decades had air-to-air missiles that lock on to hot, flying targets, and an ICBM in its first stage is essentially that. But the F-35 program, usually not one to shy away from boasting about its achievements, has been hushed about the prospect of using it to defeat one of the gravest threats to the US. "I can tell you that the F-35 is a multi-mission fighter," Cmdr. Patrick Evans of the Office of the Secretary of Defense told Business Insider when asked about the program. "It would be inappropriate to speculate on future capabilities or missions of the weapon system." The present crisis with North Korea may demand some expediency from the Pentagon regarding the F-35. The F-35, with its all-aspect stealth, is ideal for breaking into North Korea's protected airspace. It can already use the air-to-air missile in question, and its sensor fusion would make it the best plane for the job. The drawback, though, is that the F-35 would need to get close to the target missile as it's leaving the launchpad, which could mean firing interceptor missiles over enemy territory — something North Korea could see as an act of war.

Boeing présente son drone ravitailleur
Image

Drones Double Weapon Loadout with Laser-SDB
Image
The U.S. Air Force is planning to increase the weapon loadout on its MQ-9 drones by integrating Guided Bomb Unit-39B/B, also known as laser small diameter bomb (LSDB) onto the drone. The weapon is integrated into the vehicle using a dual carriage system (combat aircraft use quad rails for SDB carriage), controlled via universal armament interface. The weapon has demonstrated an attack accuracy below 2 meters, improving precision over the GPS guided weapon and adding moving target attack capability.

The Reaper currently carries two GBU-12 Laser Guided Bombs – each 230 kg (500 pound), in addition to two Hellfire missiles, both are limited to short range attack patterns. Replacing each LGB with two LSDB at almost the same weight, the drone will be able to engage targets from a much longer range. In addition, while doubling the heavier laser munitions loadout. The lighter 125-pound LSDB delivers higher lethality yet require smaller danger zones to friendly forces and civilians nearby the targets.

The LSDB weapon has been fielded in 2014 adding post-launch targeting correction and moving target attack capability to the GPS-guided GBU-39 SDB. Both types of the 110 kg (250-pound) bombs are fitted with a wing assembly that pops out after release, enabling the weapon to fly out to a range of 40-45 miles.

By allowing the attacking platform to release the weapon from a distance, the weapon minimizes early warning to a specific target. While the GPS guided version pursues an autonomous attack, the LSDB requires laser illumination at the terminal phase, either by the platform itself or by other target acquisition element.

The integration contract was awarded to the drone manufacturer General Atomics ASI by the by the Air Forces’ Medium Altitude Unmanned Aerial System Division.

New M27 Assault Rifle To Replace Long Running M4
Image
The US Marine Corps has been using the long time running Colt M4 carbine rifle. The M4 first got entered service at 1994, but it is based on the M16A2 that has been around since the 1960s.

Heckler & Koch’s M27 is considered to be the heir of the M4 rifle. The US Marine Corps adopted the M27 in 2010, but was only provided to one Marine per infantry fire team, or three per squad, and was supposed to replace the M249 SAW at the time.

The Marine Corps has decided to increase its usage of the M27 automatic assault rifle and will begin issuing the upgraded weapon in place of the ageing M4 Carbine. The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle will be given to Marines in combat-related operations.

Almost all frontline Marines will get an M27, reported ibtimes.co.uk, as they have found this rifle sufficiently better than the M4 – enough to cough up the additional cost of $3,000 per rifle. According to reports, every Marine in an infantry squad will get this weapon.

The M27 is famed for its capacity to fire accurate, short bursts of suppressive fire at the enemy at distances that are more than what was achievable by the M249 which is a less accurate but fast-firing and high-capacity weapon.

General Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps, said that “forward observers, fire support teams and engineers” are also appropriate candidates for the M27, apart from Marines in the infantry squad. He also added that Javelin anti-tank missile operators and mortarmen would continue to use M4s for now.

Manufactured by Heckler & Koch, the M27 is a 416 assault rifle that is similar in its outward appearance to the M4 Carbine. The differences between the rifles, however, are all internal, specifically in the way the bolt is driven. The M27 uses a piston operating system, while the M4 Carbine has a gas impingement system. As a result, the M27 is a cleaner, ‘cooler to the touch’ rifle. It recycles hot gases right back into the action to cycle the bolt.

Check Out This F-16C From Nellis Air Force Base’s Aggressor Squadron Wearing The Have Glass V Paint Scheme

To our knowledge, there are three new F-16Cs (including this one from the 64th AGRS) sporting the Have Glass V paint scheme.

The photos in this post (released by the Australian Department of Defence within a set of shots taken at Nellis Air Force Base where the Royal Australian Air Force has deployed with four EA-18G Growlers, one of those involved in a take off incident on Jan. 27) are particularly interesting as they show an F-16C at Nellis Air Force Base wearing a brand new Have Glass 5th generation paint scheme.

The aircraft, serial 86-0280, is an F-16C assigned to the 64th Aggressor Squadron, a jet previously painted with the Arctic and Desert color schemes. At this link you can find a shot of the aircraft in Arctic livery (but make sure to visit the rest of Bruce Smith’s Flickr gallery for other outstanding photographs of this as well as many other jets operating out of Nellis).

F-16C jets belonging to the 64th (and 18th) AGRS have been sporting different paint schemes for decades now. “Arctic”, “Blizzard“, “Splinter” and “Desert” are just a few of the “exotic” paint jobs used on the F-16s to make the Aggressor jets as similar as possible to the real threats and put the pilots in training against the Red Air in a similar situation to what they would see during an engagement with the opposing combat air forces. For this reason, such “themes” have become a distinguishing feature of U.S. Air Force Aggressors to make their fighter jets similar to a Russian 4th and 5th generation aircraft.

However, as the shots in this post seem to prove, even the Aggressors have started flying with F-16 painted with the Have Glass V: the “Have Glass 5th generation” is the evolution of the standard Have Glass program that saw all the F-16s receiving a two-tone grey color scheme made with a special radar-absorbing paint capable to reduce the aircraft Radar Cross Section. Indeed, all “Vipers” are covered with RAM (Radar Absorbent Material) made of microscopic metal grains that can degrade the radar signature of the aircraft. The Have Glass V is the latest version of the special paint.

US Army receives first bids for new Mobile Protected Firepower tank
The US Army has received bids for its Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF) programme; BAE Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) have been confirmed as participants.

The army hopes a new MPF platform can quickly deploy with relatively low logistics demand but enough protection and firepower – likely a light- to medium-tank – to ensure the infantry's freedom of action.

BAE Systems submitted a written proposal on 1 March that “leveraged the army’s earlier investment in, and made improvements on, the type-classified M8 Armored Gun System [AGS] — as well as other previous programmes — into a fully integrated MPF system”.

The M8 AGS was type classified in 1995, but was cancelled the following year; it was intended to replace M551 Sheridan light tanks used by the 3rd Battalion, 73rd Armor of the 82nd Airborne Division. In 2015 BAE Systems suggested it would bid for MPF with a platform based on the M8.

The company built a vehicle that is now going through internal testing, and it plans to submit that platform to the army by 2 April for official government testing, a BAE Systems spokesperson told Jane’s .

GDLS submitted a bid for MPF too, a source said.

In October 2016 GDLS unveiled a medium-weight tracked vehicle demonstrator, called the Griffin, which meshes elements of the turret and the 120 mm cannon from an M1A1/M1A2 Abrams main battle tank with the company's Ajax Scout Specialist Vehicle. However, the source told Jane’s that GDLS’ bid for MPF has evolved beyond the Griffin.

Other bids may have come as well – SAIC with ST Kinetics and CMI Defence were understood to be interested in the project – but only BAE Systems and GDLS had been confirmed as of this writing.
