FARNBOROUGH: AgustaWestland, Russian Helicoters join forces for single-engined helicopter

Image
AgustaWestland has joined forces with Russian Helicopters to jointly develop, produce and market an all-new 2.5t-class single-engined helicopter. The aircraft will be positioned at the bottom of the Anglo-Italian airframer's product line and will be pitched against the Eurocopter EC130 and the Bell 407, says AgustaWestland chief executive Bruno Spagnolini.

The programme will be shared on a 50:50 basis, and the aircraft is predicted to cost around €200 million ($250 million) to bring to market. "It will be designed for a global market and for a variety of applications," says Spagnolini.

This venture builds on an established partnership between the two airframers. In 2010 they signed a joint venture to assemble the AW139 medium twin-engine helicopter for the Russian and CIS markets under the HeliVert banner. The new facility in Tomolino, Moscow is expected to begin production shortly with the first aircraft scheduled for customer delivery before the end of the year. The HeliVert facility may house assembly of the new light helicopter. "There will be plenty of room here," Spagnolini says.

Meanwhile, AgustaWestland is planning to open a civil helicopter production line at its Yeovil, Somerset, UK base. The facility currently produces the AW101 and the AW159 Wild Cat military helicopters.

"We will start with the AW169 and then the AW189," says Spagnolini. "Within two years we expect the commercial helicopter business to account for 40% of Yeovil's business," he adds.

New Alenia Gunship Could Fire Hellfires, PGMs

Image
Alenia Aermacchi and ATK presented their MC-27J gunship at the Farnborough International Airshow on July 10 and said the converted C-27J could be configured to fire Hellfire missiles and release precision-guided munitions.
Officially described as a multi-mission version of the Italian tactical transport, the MC-27J will host pallet-based systems offering command and control, ISR and communications broadcast missions, as well as a gunship variant.
The latter version was brought to Farnborough, complete with a Mk44 30mm gun, which fires from the side door. The gun is installed by ATK.
The gun, also used by the U.S. Air Force on its AC-130, will fire 200 rounds a minute from an altitude of up to 12,000 feet and can be installed in four hours, said Dave Sharpin, vice president for strategy and business development at ATK.
Making it distinct from the AC-130 and the CN235 converted into a gunship by ATK for Jordan, the gun barrel on the MC-27J can be removed, allowing the door to be closed and the aircraft reconfigured for other uses.
AleniaAermacchi will also therefore be able to offer the gunship configuration as an upgrade to C-27Js.
A first phase of flight testing to take place this autumn in the U.S. will see a sighting system set on the cannon and linked to the pilot. A second phase next year will involve an electro-optical/infrared camera as well as an extra pallet with space for two operator consoles.
At a later stage, Hellfire missiles could be incorporated, as well as precision-guided missiles on a further pallet, which could be released from the rear ramp of the aircraft or from a second aperture on the side of the aircraft, Sharpin said.
Alenia Aermaccchi has said it aims to sell 50 MC-27Js in the next 20 years. The firm will likely act as prime contractor but ATK may take the role if it already has a close relationship with the customers, officials said.
The Italian Air Force already has a separate requirement for a C-27J gunship, known as Praetorian.

Farnborough : Airbus enregistre trois nouvelles commandes

“Are you sure to be able to take off with the closed air intakes :?: ”: Yakovlev Yak-130 anti-FOD system disorientates Farnborough Tower

During a media briefing held at Farnborough, Irkut‘s vice-president Konstantin Popovich recounted a funny episode that had occurred during the Yakovlev Yak-130 combat trainer first flight at the Airshow 2012.

The Russian aircraft is equipped with shields that close the air intakes for FOD (Foreign Object Damage) prevention. The system is intented to enable the Irkut-built Yak-130 to operate from unpaved/unprepared runways.

“You can not taxi because the air intakes are closed” Farnborough ATC controllers told the Yak-130 aircrew. Even after explaining that the engine-shields were a normal feature of the plane, the Tower asked if they were sure to be able to take off with the closed intakes.
