Export demand prompts Saab to boost investment in Gripen E

26 APRIL, 2018 SOURCE: FLIGHTGLOBAL.COM BY: CRAIG HOYLE LONDON
Strengthening interest in the Gripen E has prompted Saab to accelerate its investment in the programme, with the step to include the introduction of enhancements intended to heighten the product's attractiveness to prospective buyers.

"Due to the strong interest in Gripen E/F, Saab has now accelerated the pace of investment to develop the system for future exports," the company disclosed in a quarterly results announcement on 26 April.

Chief executive Håkan Buskhe describes the measure as relating to "industrialisation, and also some key development on features for the export market". While he declines to identify specific updates, he notes: "There are things that will enhance the product that we have seen during the development time for the Gripen E." This process began for launch customer the Swedish air force in 2013.

Saab

Buskhe says Saab received fresh interest in the new-generation fighter from several undisclosed nations during the first three months of this year. The company cites a long list of prospective customers for the type, including Austria, Bulgaria, India and Slovakia.

Saab will deliver its first production examples of the Gripen E to Sweden and export buyer Brazil next year and the nations will receive a combined total of 96 examples up to 2026. Buskhe says the level of interest being shown in the product is consistent with previous forecasts of a total production run of at least 400 units.

Meanwhile, referring to a 25 April declaration of intent between Airbus Defence & Space and Dassault to jointly pursue a development activity for a broad-ranging European future combat air system, Buskhe says: "We have many open doors, to see what we can do, and maybe if there is a place for us or not," referring to the possibility of a wider industrial collaboration.

But he also sees the bilateral announcement as representing a clear opportunity for the Gripen E. Describing the pact as "a signal to the market that the [Dassault] Rafale and Eurofighter [Typhoon] are in the end of their development programmes", he notes: "We have a period of time where we can deliver the best aircraft."

AREXIS

POD for jamming S / L / UHF / VHF
As incorporated in the NG (PROBABLY DIFFERENT FREQUENZ):
...Additionally, Gripen E has a new Active Electronically-Scanned Array (AESA) radar system, a passive Infra-Red Search and Track sensor system making it difficult to detect, and an improved Electronic Warfare system for the disruption and detection of threats. All the systems are governed by a new avionics system, where functions that are flight-safety critical are separate from tactical ones.

The improved EW system in Gripen E, MFS-EW (Multi Functional System), is based on the EW product family called Arexis. Arexis is based on wideband digital technology specifically developed for robustness in the very complex signal environment of today. The core technologies in Arexis are ultra-wideband digital receivers and digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) devices, gallium nitride (GaN) solid state active electronically scanned array (AESA) jammer transmitters and interferometric direction finding systems...

composite materials
here the overall summary:
Saab Summary - Certification and Operational challenges
Composite designs based on current generation toughened prepreg materials are mainly driven
by limitations in CFRP fracture toughness, matrix-controlled mechanical properties and
manufacturing issues related to anisotropy
Future multi-functional airframes, based on NLF aerodynamics and other advanced concepts, will
use extensive structural integration and new technologies. Such airframes will be significantly
more challenging to develop and certify than current CFRP structures. Their realization will require
materials, designs and manufacturing methods, including new NDI, to ensure the necessary
improved quality, damage tolerance and durability.
Emerging technologies for nano-engineered inter- and intralaminar strength improvements and
toughening, based on CNT and other efficient materials, have demonstrated significant progress
Development and certification of nano-engineered CFRP unitized structures (and/or alternative
technologies) will be challenging, but potential operational improvements include both cost and
weight efficiency as well as improved durability and related effects
The ongoing development of CFRP structural technologies calls for a corresponding improvement
of relevant analysis methods

CANSEC 2018
Wide-area Gripen flight display goes on show [CANSEC18D1]
DAVID DONALD
30 May 2018

Saab has brought its Gripen E cockpit simulator to CANSEC as part of a ramped-up effort to promote the aircraft for Canada’s Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP) requirement.

Following an initial outing to India’s DefExpo show last month, the simulator and its wide-area display (WAD) is making only its second public appearance.

Measuring 48x20cm (19x8in), the high-definition touchscreen WAD dominates the Gripen E’s cockpit. It is the primary flight and tactical display, presenting information that can be tailored to meet the exact needs of the pilot throughout all phases of flight, as well as relevant tactical data. The avionics that drive the display imagery automatically fuse data from the aircraft’s sensors, as well as information from off-board sources. Canada announced it would launch a new fighter competition in November 2016, and officially launched FFCP last December with a requirement for 88 aircraft.

Saab had declined to offer the Gripen for earlier iterations of the requirement, but the FFCP promised a more conducive procurement environment. With Boeing (Super Hornet), Dassault (Rafale), Eurofighter (Typhoon) and Lockheed Martin (F-35), Saab was named as an eligible supplier in February, and face-to-face discussions began in March.

A full RFP for the government-to- government deal is expected in spring 2019, with contract award scheduled for 2021/22. First deliveries are slated for 2025, with initial operational capability a year later. Full operational capability is scheduled for 2031.

Saab views the Gripen E/F as a perfect fit for Canada, noting several parallels with Sweden’s own requirements for the aircraft, particularly in terms of prolonged Arctic operations and those from distant forward operating bases.

The aircraft is being promoted with lower predicted life-cycle costs than its rivals while offering high levels of capability through its advanced systems, which include AESA radar.

A major factor being highlighted by Saab is the ability of ‘Team Sweden’ to provide what the company calls a “once in a lifetime industrial offset package” that includes technology transfer and the ability for Canada’s aerospace and associated industries to participate fully in the development, production/assembly, flight test and lifetime support of the country’s own aircraft.

To underline the levels of involvement that are possible, Saab points to Brazil, where a production and assembly facility has been established to produce the greater majority of the 36 Gripen E/Fs ordered by the Brazilian air force. Local industry is deeply involved in developing systems for the Gripen E/F, including the wide-area display, which is a product of Elbit’s Brazilian subsidiary AEL Sistemas. The primary Brazilian industrial partner, Embraer, is also spearheading the development of the Gripen F twoseat version.

Gripen E ready for weapons carriage trials

17 MAY, 2018 SOURCE: FLIGHTGLOBAL.COM BY: CRAIG HOYLE LONDON
Saab's Gripen E is set to start its next major period of testing, as the new-generation fighter stays on course for delivery from next year, the Swedish manufacturer says.

"We are preparing for the next phase of flight trials – that is, external stores," says Jonas Hjelm, head of Saab's aeronautics business unit. Since the first prototype's flight debut in June 2017, the programme has remained on track, he says, with recent milestones including achieving supersonic flight.

Asset Image

Saab

"We are on track. We will deliver according to the contracts that we have," Hjelm confirms. Saab has current orders from the Swedish and Brazilian air forces for a combined 96 E/F-model fighters, with both expected to receive their first examples before the end of 2019.

Speaking during the company's annual Gripen seminar in Stockholm on 16 May, Hjelm declined to reveal when the programme's remaining two prototypes will join the test fleet, but says "they will fly in the not too far future."

Pointing to Saab's adoption of an app-type software development philosophy with the Gripen E, he notes: "We have solved how you reconfigure an aircraft without jeopardising the flight-critical evidence. This will really impact how we are able to adapt the aircraft to new challenges."

Meanwhile, the annual Gripen User Group event took place earlier this month in Brazil, where the construction of a new Saab/Akaer-backed aerostructures plant is also advancing.

Saab recently completed an upgrade activity to bring the Czech air force's Gripen C/Ds to its latest MS20 operating standard, which was first fielded by Sweden in 2016.

"The Czech air force will really improve their overall capabilities" as a result of the update, Hjelm says. "We know that other customers will follow: next in line to get these enhanced capabilities is the Hungarian air force." South Africa and Thailand are also current users of the single-engined type.
