Embraer Inks Deal to Supply A-29 Tucanos to Guatemala

Apr. 10, 2013 - 07:03AM

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Embraer Defense & Security will supply a fleet of A-29 Tucano aircraft and a network of surveillance and control systems to protect a jungle reserve in Guatemala from illegal exploitation, the company said Tuesday.

Embraer announced the deal at the LAAD exhibition here.

South America’s largest aerospace and defense company said it had signed a contract to build a surveillance and protection system for the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala, the largest tropical forest area in Central America.

The deal involves acquisition of six A-29s, a command and control system, and three primary three-dimensional radars. The order also covers logistical support for the aerial operations and training for pilots and mechanics, Embraer said.

The surveillance system will be used to allow Guatemalan authorities to combat deforestation, forest fires, illegal occupation and illegal economic activities in an area covering more than 21,000 square kilometers.

The contract means Guatemala will become the 12th A-29 operator. Half of them are in Latin America.

Colombia; Interest in Rafael new MkII Zibar MRAP

The MKII Zibar MRAP developed by Israeli Rafael has been demonstrated to the Colombian Army and Marine Corps, reportedly arousing great interest in its performance.

The Zibar is offered also as MRAP, with shields and helmets B6/B7 level design "V", allowing it to successfully withstand explosions MAP, UXO and IEDs, as well as impacts of 5,56 x45mm caliber ammunition and 7,62 x39mm.

This version has been developed for use in desert environments and for COIN type operations, thanks to 4x4, which provides great maneuverability in rough terrain, having the ability to carry up to six men, with their respective team-and also having weapons station in the middle of the vehicle to which it is accessed by a turret that can mount a machine gun Browning M-2HB-QCB 12.7 mm, or a machine gun U.S. Ordnance M-60 of 7 , 62 mm. Its wheels are of the "run flats" and has air conditioning.
