Brazil to re-evaluate $6B Warships Plan
Following the delay in decision about the Brazilian Air Force future fighter, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will reevaluate a 10 billion real ($6 billion) plan to purchase 11 offshore patrol vessels for the Brazilian Navy, as she seeks to streamline government expenses, according to news agency Reuters quoting local newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, citing people familiar with the decision.

The need for the new ships derive from growing offshore drilling at Brazils’ economic exclusion zone (EEZ), located more than 120 miles (193 km) into the Atlantic Ocean. Potential bidders for the program include BAE Systems from the U.K., Thyssenkrupp from Germany and the Franch DCNS company, which is already under contract since 2009 to build Brazil’s future submarines as part of an 20 billion reais arms procurement plan. Other bidders likely to join the tender include the South Korean company Daewoo group and Italian ship builder Fincatieri.

Un moteur brésilien pour le missile MM40
Image

The prototype of the upgraded AMX, designated A-1M flew today for the first time. The first flight was the kickoff mark for the aircraft’s flight test campaign. The A-1M program provides for refurbishing and upgrading of 43 FAB AMX subsonic fighters. Ten aircraft are already at the Company’s facilities, the first of two prototypes has already been completed and the company plans the first deliveries for 2013. Brazil’s Aeronautics Commander, Air Force General Juniti Saito, and senior officers from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) attended the first flight at Embraer’s manufacturing plant in Gavião Peixoto, in outstate São Paulo, Brazil.

“The A-1Ms are receiving modern systems that are similar to those already found on the F-5M and A-29 aircraft. All of the upgrades and acquisitions are aligned with the objectives of the Aeronautics Strategic Military Planning (PEMAER)” said Aeronautics Commander, Air Force General Juniti Saito. PEMAER positions the FAB’s future growth based on medium- and long-term studies – aligned with Brazil’s National Defense Policy (PND) and National Defense Strategy (END) highlighting benefit for the nation’s industry and technology base. To offer the highest benefit, upgrade programs are sharing common avionics, contributing to better commonality in instrument orientation and pilots training. “This commonality is providing a level of standardization that comes with numerous operational advantages, such as improving the employment doctrine of the FAB and a better yield in terms of flight hours.” General Saito added.

Boeing va collaborer avec Embraer sur le KC-390

Image
Image

Boeing to arm Embraer's Super Tucano fighter
Brazil's Embraer is announcing plans on Tuesday for Boeing Co to supply a new weapons system for its light attack fighter, strengthening its offer in a fiercely contested bid for a U.S. Air Force contract in Afghanistan.

The new weapons system will offer longer-range "smart" bombs guided by laser and GPS, Embraer said. The company will provide details of the new system, first reported in the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, at the Farnborough Airshow later in the day.

With the Boeing weapons system on its Super Tucano fighter, Embraer aims to bolster its bid for a $355 million Air Force contract. The contract is for 20 light air support planes for the Afghan military's counterinsurgency missions.

Embraer and privately held partner Sierra Nevada won the contract in a prior round of bidding that the Air Force scrapped earlier this year after a lawsuit by rival Hawker Beechcraft.

An Embraer spokesman said the company's latest bid last month [ID:nL1E8G8FSO] included the Boeing weapons system.

Boeing's new role as subcontractor on the Super Tucano reinforces growing ties between the U.S. and Brazilian aerospace and defense industries.

The companies announced in June that they would collaborate on some aspects of developing Embraer's KC-390 military transport and refueling jet.

Boeing has also been working for years to land a Brazilian jet fighter contract, worth an initial $4 billion, for its F-18 Super Hornet.

Brazil – Assault Amphibious Vehicle

WASHINGTON, August 1, 2012 – The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress July 31 of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Brazil for 26 Assault Amphibious Vehicles and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $233 million.

The Government of Brazil has requested the possible sale of 26 Assault Amphibious Vehicles (AAVs)/Reliability, Availability and Maintainability/Rebuild to Standard (RAM/RS), with ancillary equipment, and machine guns. Also included are the upgrade of Brazil’s existing AAVs to the RAM/RS configuration,
weapons and ammunition, spare and repair parts, support equipment, tools and test equipment, technical data and publications, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $233 million

The proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of Brazil, which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in South America.

Brazil will use this equipment to augment its current inventory of amphibious vehicles and to modernize and strengthen its naval operational amphibious capability in support of national defense objectives. Brazil will have no difficulty absorbing these vehicles into its armed forces.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The AAVs will be procured through a competitive procurement. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Brazil.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.
