L'armée brésilienne attribue un contrat de 6 milliards $ à Embraer pour la phase initiale de surveillance et de défense des frontières
The Brazilian Army has selected local contractor Embraer Defence and Security to build the initial phase of a massive surveillance and protection along the length of its 16,886-kilometer land border.

The Tepro consortium, led by Embraer-controlled companies Savis Tecnologica and Orbisat Industria, has been named to undertake contract negotiations on the first part of what could be a $6 billion program known as Sisfron, or Sistema Integrado de Monitoramento de Fronteiras.

Sisfron is set to include land radars and other ground sensors, unmanned air vehicles, communications, command and control and other elements.

The Brazilian Army hopes to complete Sisfron by the end of 2019, giving surveillance and protection 150 km deep along a border with Brazil’s 11 neighbors.

The initial phase of the project will cover an area under the responsibility of the Brazilian Western Military Command.

Brazil tests Hermes UAVs in border surveillance exercise
Image
Brazil has begun using its Elbit Systems Hermes 450 unmanned air vehicles to perform surveillance duties along its border with Bolivia. Two of the Brazilian air force's new UAVs were trialled in the monitoring task during the recent Operation "Agata 6".

The first two Hermes systems are being operated by the air force's "Horus" squadron from Santa Maria air base, Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 2011, the unit has now flown more than 600h with its Hermes 450s, locally designated as RQ-450s.

In preparation for hosting the football World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016, Brazil's defence ministry has dispatched 7,500 troops to the country's northwest borders with Peru and Bolivia in an effort to stop cross-border criminal operations.Elbit's Brazilian subsidiary Aeroeletronica was awarded a $48 million contract in January 2011 to supply Hermes 450 systems. The air force is evaluating the purchase of more UAVs following the recent operation along its border.

With a 450kg (990lb) maximum take-off weight, the Hermes 450 tactical UAV can supply real-time intelligence data to ground forces. With a wingspan of 10.5m (34ft), the aircraft has a maximum flight endurance of more than 20h.

Brazil keeps F-X2 fighter contest on hold until economy recovers
By: Stephen Trimble Washington DC
05:32 12 Dec 2012

Brazil will keep a long-delayed acquisition of 36 fighters on hold until the national economy recovers from an ongoing slump, according to translated remarks by President Dilma Rousseff.

The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet (below), Dassault Rafale and Saab Gripen NG were shortlisted by the Brazilian air force in 2008 for the F-X2 deal.

Image

Brazil's government had expected to sign a contract during 2012, but the award has now been postponed indefinitely while it diverts funds to bolster the economy with tax cuts and infrastructure spending, Rousseff says.

The final selection "may take some time", says Rousseff, according to a translation of her responses during a press conference in Paris.

In the "coming months", she adds, the government hopes the economy will grow at a rate that will allow the F-X2 award to move forward.

The F-X2 deal was expected to be signed three years ago as the Brazilian economy was booming. But a series of missteps during the evaluation process first delayed a contract award, and then the tender was put on hold for a year after Rousseff's election in November 2010.

The latest delay means it is unlikely that the Brazilian air force will have the new fighters in operation before the country hosts the 2014 World Cup. Its current inventory includes 10 Dassault Mirage 2000Cs and 43 Northrop F-5E/EMs, according to Flightglobal's MiliCAS database.

Russia To Export Ka-62 Helicopters To Brazil

Tue, Dec 18, 2012 13:30 CET
Russian Helicopters, subsidiary of state defence holding Oboronprom, has signed its first export contract for the medium multirole Ka-62 with Brazilian Atlas Táxi Aéreo. Seven Ka-62s are scheduled for delivery within the period of first quarter 2015 to first quarter 2016.

Testing of the Ka-62 is scheduled to start in 2013, and Russian Helicopters is targeting certification for international use by 2015. Under the contract with Atlas Táxi Aéreo, Russian Helicopters and its regional partners will establish a service centre providing after-sales care and maintenance in Brazil. The Ka-62’s spacious and comfortable cabin makes it ideally suited for corporate use and carrying passengers, as well as special operations. Atlas Táxi Aéreo already operates medium multirole Mi-171A1s which were delivered last year. This helicopter won a tender from Petrobras, the Brazilian national oil company, and the fleet will be expanded in the future.

The Brazilian Air Force employs a fleet of Russian Mi-35M multi-purpose attack helicopters, the newest consignment of which were delivered in August of this year under a contract with Rosoboronexport OJSC.

According to the Brazilian Defence Ministry, the Mi-35M is an advanced attack helicopter with high firepower that can be used to escort other helicopters, isolate a combat zone or provide artillery support to ground forces. Russian helicopters were the first specialized attack helicopters integrated into the Brazilian Air Force fleet.
