A Russian strategic submarine, the Yuri Dolgoruky, successfully test-launched a salvo of four Bulava ballistic missiles from beneath the White Sea, Tuesday.

The Kremlin is a historical ally of Damascus and deployed batteries of this advanced missile platform at the Khmeimim airbase near Latakia in western Syria after its intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assad. On paper, the S-400 system is designed to destroy aircraft, drones, and cruise and ballistic missiles up to 400 kilometers away; it is also equipped with a radar able to detect targets at a range of 600km. Since its installation in Syrian territory, the action of Western and Turkish warplanes in support of rebel forces has been limited. The presence of S-400 platforms in the Syrian theater possibly influenced the US strategy of attack against the Assad regime. Though the Pentagon informed the Russian military beforehand of the impending operation, the US military command decided to attack from a safe distance. Tomahawk missiles have a range of 1,600km and their use in place of strike aircraft was probably intended to minimize potential losses caused by the very fast and precise S-400 surface-to-air missiles. This could mean that the Pentagon acknowledges the effectiveness of the S-400 against warplanes and the electronic jamming capabilities of the US EA-18G Growler jets, which can weaken the operability of the Russian air shield in Syria but not neutralize it completely. Thus the S-400’s deterrent function against aircraft sorties appears to be confirmed by the military option chosen by the United States to punish Assad. S-400’s vulnerability to swarm missile attacks On the other hand, the barrage of Tomahawks demonstrated the Pentagon’s capacity to perforate the Russian defenses in Syria, possibly showing the vulnerability of the S-400 to low-flying missiles with small radar cross-sections. The S-400 radar probably detected the Tomahawk swarm but the firing system apparently did not attempt to hit any missiles. It is now an open question whether Moscow’s military command in Syria deliberately opted not to engage the US missiles once informed of the imminent attack or, in contrast, was unable to react.

However one must remember, that it is never correct to compare one system to another without looking at the bigger picture. In the modern battle field nothing works on its own. Any given asset or a system has a fixed role to play and it works in sync with the bigger network that will eventually help achieve the goal. So without further ado, here is the comparative analysis of US made THAAD and Russia’s S400 and S500 air defense systems.
THAAD THAAD
is a relative recent addition to the United States’ anti-ballistic missile/interceptor toolkit.
How does THAAD work? ..... Watch in the Video S400 The S-400 was developed to defend Russian air space and a few hundred kilometers further against missiles and aircraft of all types, including stealth Jets.
S500
The S-500 is expected to be much more capable than the current S-400. Its response time is only 3 to 4 seconds. Each of the above systems have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Russians could certainly overwhelm THAD in a concentrated attack while The US could overwhelm S-400 and S500, Given that the US has much more advanced assets like (B-2, F-22 & F-35), specifically designed to penetrate and destroy air defenses. In addition data from all US sensors are increasingly being networked, and fused into a common picture of the airspace, that is used to then target weapons from a huge number of stealth assets. Both systems would probably acquit themselves well, but in a real time scenario the scales are really tipped in one direction.

Russian President Vladimir Putin bragged earlier this year that his country had a new nuclear-powered missile with unlimited range — but it has yet to perform a successful test over multiple attempts, according to sources with direct knowledge of a U.S. intelligence report on the weapons program.

The cruise missile was tested four times between November and February, each resulting in a crash, according to sources who spoke to CNBC on the condition of anonymity.

The U.S. assessed that the longest test flight lasted just more than two minutes, with the missile flying 22 miles before losing control and crashing. The shortest test lasted four seconds and flew for five miles.

One report, according to the sources, did not mention health or environmental risks posed by damages to the missile's nuclear reactor.

The weapon, which has been in development since the early 2000s, is believed to use a gasoline-powered engine for takeoff before switching to a nuclear-powered one for flight, sources explained to CNBC.

The tests apparently showed that the nuclear-powered heart of the cruise missile failed to initiate and, therefore, the weapon was unable to achieve the indefinite flight Putin had boasted about.

Sources said that the tests were ordered by senior Kremlin officials despite objections from the program's engineers, who voiced concerns that the system was still in its infancy.

During a state of the nation address in March, Putin claimed the cruise missile was capable of delivering a warhead to any point in the world while evading missile defense systems. In the same two-hour speech, Putin touted an arsenal of new hypersonic weapons which he called "invincible."

A week ago, CNBC learned the hypersonic glide vehicle, a weapon the U.S. currently is unable to defend against, will be ready for war by 2020.

The sources, who spoke to CNBC on the condition of anonymity, said Russia successfully tested the weapon, which could carry a nuclear warhead, twice in 2016. The third known test of the device was carried out in October 2017 and resulted in a failure when the platform crashed seconds before striking its target.

The Russians are expected to conduct a fourth test sometime this summer.
